Separation anxiety is a normal developmental phenomenon from age 10 months to early preschool years. Separation anxiety disorder, however, is a problem that reaches beyond those years. It is an anxiety disorder that often involves persistent problems with attending school or other activities away from home because of fear of separation. Reactions to separation are extreme. Symptoms of separation anxiety occur in as many as 50% of 8-year-olds, whereas the prevalence of the full disorder is estimated at closer to 4%. .
